Dating back to the American Revolution, Ferry Point Park was more remembered for unfinished development projects until Donald Trump steps in. He transforms the east side of the Bronx, NY park property into Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point. Open to the public, the championship course designed by Jack Nicklaus is receiving rave reviews. The park’s past also comes into play with special requirements needed for security. American Integrated Security Group is called to the tee box to deliver a comprehensive solution that matches the caliber of the challenging course.

Project Summary

Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point, located just minutes outside of Manhattan, marks the first public course to open in New York City in more than 50 years and offers everyday golfers the experience of playing like the pros. After failed attempts at an 18-hole golf course by the original developer of the project, Donald Trump gets the contract from the city to operate the Ferry Point golf course for 20 years. Trump, along with Ferry Point course designer and golf history’s greatest champion Jack Nicklaus, design the course with all golfers in mind, but also with the ability to host a major golf tournament. To keep a close eye on the course at all times, American Integrated Security Group (AISG) provides a state of the art fiber optic detection system, along with top of the line fire, video surveillance, security, alarm intrusion and perimeter protection.

System Design

The 415-acre Ferry Point Park in the Bronx, NY, is a peninsula projecting into the East River. The Hutchinson River Parkway crosses the park to the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, splitting it into east and west sides. Today, the east side is Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point, an 18-hole links style Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course designed specifically to take advantage of the spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline and surrounding bridges and waterways. Several security challenges are present. Open on the water side at the East River, the course also borders on Saint Raymond’s Cemetery, and the mixed neighborhoods (residential, commercial and retail) of Throggs Neck. Damage to the greens is a major security concern with access through the existing fence easily breached. A new Clubhouse, barn and other areas are at risk of vandalism and break-ins. Several layers of security are needed for both inside operations and outside perimeter protection at Trump Ferry Point.

In Phase One, AISG secures the interiors and exteriors of the Clubhouse, restaurant and Pro Shop, Repair Shop, Golf Cart Barn and additional buildings with Honeywell fire and burglar alarm systems, as well as a combination of over 65 IP and 360-degree cameras inside and out from Panasonic, Vivotek and Axis Communications. AISG also installs a Cisco network, Wavestore server, and S2 Security IP access control system.

The east side of Ferry Point Park had been a former garbage landfill and AISG wants to avoid digging deep into the ground around the perimeter of the golf course. In Phase Two of the project, AISG utilizes Axis Communications thermal cameras and Silent Sentinel p/t/z thermal cameras with fiber optic sensing technology from OptaSense in the ground to alert of an intruder. Known for working well even under harsh winter conditions, OptaSense is the perfect solution for preserving the look and views of the golf course while following City commission regulations. NYC regulators are onsite to make sure no damage is done to the ground liner as AISG buries 5000 feet of fiber around the perimeter. Fiber is also run to all the buildings.

The last piece of the original install is a wireless self contained solar pole equipped with one Axis Communications 360-degree camera and two Axis fixed cameras with zoom on the 18th hole to verify if a golfer gets a prize winning hole in one. AISG monitors the alarm, cameras and fiber protection systems along with onsite guards at the park who are equipped with remote mobile surveillance capabilities. Happy with the system performance and positive results, plans for additional security are in place.
